YOUNG people in Woori Yallock are tackling Saturday night boredom with regular games nights.

A youth group was given $3000 in the 2009 round of grants by Youth Foundations Victoria to see their project grow and benefit the community.

The project was to provide a safe environment for young people to hang out and have some fun and the project’s organisers from Ignite Youth – David, 23, Sarah, 20, Tim, 18, and Jack, 17 – said their launch nights were a big success.

David said more than 10 people showed up on the first launch night, including youths from 14 to 17-years old.

“It was great. We ran the horizontal bungy and sumo wrestling – the kids were really into it and had lots of fun,” he said.

David said the second launch had about 20 young people and he hopes the flow-on effect continues.

He said they want to try and organise different activities each fortnight and create a positive ongoing environment for the community’s young people.

The young people were given a room by the local church in Woori Yallock to use on Saturday nights, and promoted the launch events by hanging posters and handing out free hot chocolates to students at the Woori Yallock bus stops.

The grant money was spent on setting up the room with an air hockey table, table tennis, and fussball table, and several couches have been donated as well.

The next young people’s games night will be held on 31 July, and every two weeks thereafter, from 6.30 to 9pm at 3/10 Nester Road, Woori Yallock.
