STATISTICS released from the Traffic Accident Commission last week revealed Altona North region to have high averages of serious injuries in road accidents over the past three years.

The Altona North region includes five police service areas which are Werribee, Hobsons Bay, Maribrynong, Brimbank and Melton.

The region recorded the third highest average of serious injuries in road accidents in Victoria following Dandenong with 741 and Nunawading with 578 from 2007 to 2009.

The region’s three-year average for serious injuries was 548, and figures had shown a steady increase in injuries over the past three years, showing an increase from 522 serious injuries in 2007 to 569 in 2009.

But there has been a marked reduction in the number of fatalities since 2007, with 16 recorded road fatalities for the region, down from 25.

However this still remains the fourth highest region for road fatalities in Victoria, with a three-year average of 18.

But TAC figures released in January showed 2009 to be Hobsons Bay’s lowest road toll in 20 years, with only one fatality.

In Hobsons Bay there were three fatalities in 2008 and eight in 2007.
