AN ELDERLY couple were lucky to escape injury when a car smashed into their Dandenong house last week.

About 9pm on 25 January, Dandenong and Hallam firefighters were notified of a gas leak on Gladstone Road.

Dandenong fire officer Paul Caligari said crews arrived to find the gas leak was caused by a car that had run off the road, hit a gas meter and smashed into a house near the main bedroom.

“The car had gone through the weatherboards of the house, causing structural damage,” he said.

An elderly man, who lived in the house with his wife, had left the bedroom just minutes before the car hit.

Mr Caligari said a firefighter went into the building to assess damage and the structural integrity of the house while others shut down the gas leak.
