School alarm

POLICE have slammed hoon behaviour after a former student of ISIK College drove erratically through the school’s car park at 1.30pm on Monday and smashed into a fence, while many students watched nearby.

The incident nearly echoed a horrifying crash in May 2005, when seven students were badly injured after a car ploughed into a playground wall at Dandenong West Primary School.

The wall fell on grade one student, Sabi Mashid, who had to get a prosthetic foot after his was amputated.

Senior Constable Richard Walter from Dandenong Traffic Management Unit (TMU) said police could not believe young drivers were still not getting the message.

“(It was the) first day back to school for students across the state. What should have been a positive day could have been a disaster at this school,” he said.

“If the driver had not veered away at the last moment, who knows what could have happened.

“Police are sick of young hoon drivers thinking they are invincible. They are not. Their hoon behaviour and dangerous driving is risking the lives of all road users.”

ISIK College assistant principal Mehmet Koca said it was an unfortunate way to start the school year but he was relieved no-one was injured.

“He hit the right hand side of the fence, where no students were standing. Other students standing near the left hand side observed it,” he said.

“It was not a major accident. I am just happy no-one was hurt. The driver was okay.”

It is alleged two vehicles driven by past students entered the Keysborough school car park. When asked to leave, one driver left and did a burnout as he exited the car park.

Police said the second driver accelerated, doing a 40-metre burnout before hitting a fence.

The car, a Nissan Skyline Coupe has been impounded by police and the driver, an 18-year-old from Mulgrave was arrested at the scene.

The first driver, an 18-year-old from Dandenong later contacted police and both men were interviewed by police.

Sen Const Walter said he had a clear message to all young drivers.

“Think before you drive, think before you put down your accelerator, think before you put lives in danger,” he said.
