MONEY gambled on Wyndham poker machines is increasing each month compared to last year’s figures.

Statistics from the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation (VCGR) reveal $7.4 million was slotted away in October compared to $6.7 million the previous year.

The past three months have also seen close to a $1 million jump.

Werribee Plaza Tavern raked in a staggering $19 million from its 80 machines over the last financial year to become the fourth highest gambling club in Victoria.

Commercial Taverner took $12 million, Westside Taverner collected $11 million with the Tiger Club House and Hoppers Crossing Club each snaring about $7 million.

Each year the figures have soared with the Christmas period, July and August seeing the most pokies action.

More than $79 million was collected over the last year despite the global economic crisis.

Wyndham City Council drew a line in the sand and moved to end the growth of gaming machines.

The Electronic Gaming Machines policy was adopted last year and resonated with the concerns of residents.

But the power to halt the amount lies with the State Government.

New gaming reforms to be introduced in 2012 will allow local clubs and pubs to own and operate machines.

A landmark decision was made last month when Macedon Ranges Council won its battle on behalf of the Romsey community to prevent the installation of poker machines at the town’s only hotel.

VCAT refused an application for 30 gaming machines at the Romsey Hotel.

Wyndham Council refused a planning permit for a hotel and gaming venue with 70 poker machines at Point Cook in August.
