THE Victorian Golf Association has released its pennant fixture to the member clubs and David Greenhill the director of golf at the VGA was kind enough to send me an advanced copy and it looks as if it will be an exciting season for the clubs taking part.

Kooringal will kick off their quest for the division two flag on Sunday 14 March at Kingston Heath when they take on The Heritage. Sanctuary Lakes and new Captain Brett Mackie will host the division three teams at home on 14 March when they will play their opening game against Croydon.

Kooringal will host their division on Anzac Day, Sunshine in division four are hosts on 28 March, Melton Valley also in division four like Kooringal will host on Anzac Day and Medway who will play next year in division five will host their division on 28 March. The courses that will host the VGA finals will be Keysborough, Kew and Northern.

THE Sanctuary Lakes ladies held a successful golf day last week when they hosted over 70 ladies from 21 different golf clubs which included presidents and captains from eight golf clubs within the north-west region.

The ladies were welcomed to the club by captain Brett Mackie and then played a 4 BBB stableford competition followed by lunch in the newly refurbished Norman Room. The winners had their trophies presented to them by Stacey Keating and they were Wendy Callahan and Lisa Mills from the Anglesea Golf Club on a countback from Helen Somogy and Di Graham from the Box Hill Golf Club.

The longest drives in A Grade went to Chris McGibben from the Royal Hobart Golf Club and Jan McLeod from Kooringal Golf Club took off the B grade prize. Nearest-the-pin prizes went to Adele Huggard from the Portarlington Golf Club and Sally Diserio from the Women’s Golf Network.

IT WAS interesting to see that an agreement has been reached between the NSW Golf Association and Women’s Golf NSW on an amalgamation between the two groups. This has been coming for some time and I believe that an announcement is due shortly on a similar breakthrough between the Victorian Golf Association and Women’s Golf Victoria. For the past few years an amalgamation between the two Victorian golfing bodies has been on the drawing board and it will be a red letter day for the game in this state when it comes to fruition.

WITH a lot of talk about Stacey Keating of late particularly in women’s golf, it seems that the west is producing some excellent talent following in Stacey’s footsteps. Some time ago I mentioned young Stephanie Robinson from the Sunshine Golf Club and how she was playing some good golf at the time. It seems that she has also come under the eye of Women’s Golf Victoria as she was recently selected in the Victorian junior state squad of 14, which will be whittled down to six by February. A handy player off a six handicap, the club hopes that she can make the state squad when the final six are announced.

LONG time Sanctuary Lakes member Geoff East had one very good reason to smile last week when he played a lazy seven iron from the tee on the par three second hole and then watched the ball bounce a couple of times and then roll into the hole. He said that at least it was in competition and it will be nice to see his name up on the hole in one board at the club.

TIGER-MANIA will hit Melbourne this week now that the Spring Racing Carnival is all but over. Stand by to see Tiger Woods saturation in all aspects of the media but I think that some people in Melbourne are losing sight of the fact that the event next week is the Australian Masters and not the Tiger Woods Invitational.

Yes, he is the best golfer in the world and yes, it is great to see him here at Kingston Heath but there will be some other top golfers playing in the event including Geoff Ogilvy who loves the ‘Heath’ as he played there a lot when he was a pennant player at for Victoria Golf Club and one of this state’s top amateurs.

Whatever the outcome the game itself will be the big winner and at least we can expect golf to make the front pages of the daily’s, where it has not been for quite a few years, and that is good for those who are involved and play it as a chosen sport on a regular basis.
