TENANT advocacy groups have welcomed Consumer Affairs Victoria’s warning against a rogue boarding house operator, while calling for more action against such businesses.

CAV advised consumers last week to avoid dealing with anyone claiming to be operating in the name of Northern Suburbs Accommodation Centre.

The warning came about seven months after that company had its registration cancelled by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

“CAV recently became aware that Northern Suburbs Accommodation Centre had used the name at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal after the date on which its registration was cancelled by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission,” Consumer Affairs director Dr Claire Noone said.

“CAV is investigating the conduct of this business and will take appropriate enforcement action should these inquiries reveal breaches of (legislation).”

Housing and support provider HomeGround Services welcomed the warning message, but also pointed out the lack of better alternatives for those facing homelessness in the local community.

“We know of many individuals and families turning to private rooming house operators like Northern Suburbs Accommodation Centre due to Melbourne’s affordable housing crisis,” HomeGround’s CEO Stephen Nash said.

“Issuing a warning is a great symbolic step, but in reality homeless residents have nowhere else to turn until more decent, affordable and accessible housing is created,” he said.
