VICTORIA Police launched its largest ever recruitment campaign in July this year.

The campaign will cost $6 million over the next two years and is aiming to attract 1700 more officers over the next five years.

“Despite the large recruitment target, we will not be dropping our standards.

“Our recruitment requirements are very clear and we are looking for people who have the right skills and who clearly demonstrate the key values of integrity, leadership, flexibility, respect, support and professionalism,” Chief Commissioner Simon Overland said.

Constable Joe Bugeja is one of 11 probationary officers at Altona North Police station and was recruited in December last year.

For Const Bugeja, 40, the decision to join the Victoria Police later in life was a natural one after working in Melbourne’s Assessment Prison prior to his recruitment.

Victoria Police are encouraging men and women from varying backgrounds with different professional and life experiences to apply with diversity being the key aim of the drive.

“It’s been (the last eight months) challenging and really exciting. There is never a dull moment and the staff are really helpful,” he said.

“My family were excited and proud that I have been able to achieve what I have so far.”

Const Bugeja said he would encourage others to consider joining the police force.

“Get as much information as you can and do as much research as possible. Go to your local police station and speak to them and prepare yourself for five months of hard work and commitment,” Constable Bugeja said.

“At the end of the day it is a very rewarding job.”
