BROOKLYN residents are at their wit’s end after calling the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) 180 times in the last 12 months.

The EPA received a total of 845 pollution reports from the Hobsons Bay area between 1 September 2009 and 1 September just gone.

One hundred and eighty of the reports were odour complaints from the Brooklyn area.

Charlie Volpe from the Brooklyn Residents Action Group (BRAG) said the figure did not surprise him.

Mr Volpe told Star the people of Brooklyn have had enough with many residents being forced to sell their homes to flee the stink.

“We just want it (the smell) to stop and we’re sick of complaining about something which should have been fixed a long time ago,” he said.

“We’re not giving up. What we should have is what everyone deserves.”

EPA spokesperson Ruth Ward told Star the EPA had a special interest in the Brooklyn area, with several investigations underway in regard to odour.

“Everybody is aware of the situation and doing everything they can to remedy it,” she said.

Mr Volpe has lived in Brooklyn for 13 years and said aside from the smell, it is a great place to live.

“We’re over it. We want to be known for different things. We’re a great community of people who really look after each other,” he said.

“They’ve had more than their fare share of complaints, it’s about time something gets done.”

Residents with concerns regarding odour can call EPA’s pollution watchline on 9695 2777.
