AMONG a pile in a container alongside the Seagulls’ grandstand lay an unsuspecting suitcase.
It was “nothing special”, but to the surprise of director Graeme Kennedy, as he riffled through it, he found flags dating back to the club’s first premiership, 103 years ago.
Williamstown Football Club general manager Brendan Curry said it was an amazing discovery.
“When we saw they were going back to 1907, 1921 we thought ‘well crikey’,” Mr Curry said.
The club’s first ever premiership was in 1907 and the suitcase held the tattered 1907 flag, 1921, 1939, 1945, 1949 and 1954, 1955 and 1956 flags.
As the first stage of Burbank Oval’s $7.3 million redevelopment project gets underway, the club has been moving all of the equipment at the ground to two portable rooms.
The oval will be sown with drought-proof grass, a 1 million litre tank will be installed under the oval, the grandstand refurbished and a multi-purpose entertainment facility built.
The dusty and tattered football relics will need to be restored and Mr Curry said they were considering incorporating a memorabilia section in the new football club.
“They are so old and have a lot of history and we want to incorporate those aspects into the club and pay due respect,” he said.
“People love history and we’re working with the council to honour our past deeds, the flags are very important.”
The club is now calling out for memorabilia from any past sporting fans or athletes involved with the Williamstown Football Club.
“We are going to be cataloguing it, finding out what we’ve got and trying to organise something,” he said.
But Mr Curry said the current teams might not be as wrapped up in the history of the premiership flags, but focused on the future.
“The players will want to add another premiership flagship flag to the ones we’ve already got,” he said.
