GUNPOWDER and gold, the treasures of Eureka Stockade will visit Altona Meadows Library next month.

Ned Kelly’s Jerilderie letter will be among the State Library treasures displayed at the library on 6 May as part of the Travelling Treasures program.

The Jerilderie letter is a detailed eye witness account of Eureka Stockade and one of Melbourne’s earliest handwritten newspapers.

Travelling Treasures tour manager Hamish Curry said it was a unique opportunity to see rare items outside the State Library.

‘These are amazing and very evocative items. Each one of them is very personal but in different ways. A letter from a young Sonya Hartnett hoping to get her book published sits along side Kelly’s Jerilderie letter. Then there is an eye witness account of the Eureka Stockade written by Raffaello Carboni, one of the leaders of the rebellion. These are revealing documents that anyone with an interest in Victoria’s personalities and history shouldn’t miss,’ he said. A presentation will be included as part of the exhibition at the Altona Meadows Library and Learning Centre, Central Square Shopping Centre on 6 May between 6 - 7.30pm.
