THREE brothers took the chance to cool off at Williamstown beach last Wednesday in the record breaking November heat, but many still forget that staying cool should be a priority.

Last week temperatures rocketed to 34 degrees with thousands of people flooding Altona and Williamstown beaches to soak up the sun.

This week temperatures are expected to rise over 30 degrees again.

While sunseekers will saturate the beaches, Ambulance Victoria warn that residents should be wary of heat and sunstroke.

Ambulance Victoria spokesperson Lauren Nowak said there was a large number of sun and heatstroke cases that ended in hospitalisation in the Hobsons Bay area in January.

In the midst of the January heatwave, one such case was a 29-year-old man who collapsed in Williamstown after wearing tracksuit pants, a black shirt and a woollen hat.

“He collapsed and a friendly driver saw it and called us,” she said.

On 29 January in extreme heat, Ms Nowak said it was lucky a woman visited her 83-year-old Altona North auntie.

“The niece noticed the house was hotter than outdoors – the air-conditioner was blowing out hot air,” she said.

The woman was taken to Williamstown Hospital.
