LAVERTON students will promote safe party strategies at a community forum on 29 October.

Year 11 students from Laverton P-12 College started the project to provide information to young people and their parents on how to hold a safe and fun party and avoid risk behaviours such as alcohol abuse, drugs and unsafe sex.

Laverton P-12 College student Stacey Gibbons has been one of the students organising the forum.

“This is the very first project of its type being a totally youth-led project and we hope to show the Hobsons Bay community what great changes young people from Laverton P-12 are making,” she said.

The forum is aimed at young people, parents, teachers and community members and will feature speakers from Victoria Police, Women’s Health West, adolescent psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg and comedians Nelly Thomas and Kelly Nash.

Students received a Youth Foundations grant for the project, which aims to enable young people to look at the needs of their community and make grants for youth-led activities.

They will also hold a personal safety information session for year five to seven students and a safe party for year 10 -12 students.

The forum will be held from 6pm at Laverton Community Centre.
