Not so delighted

INNOVA Soil Technology has made a claim (19 August) that it is delighted and encouraged by the strong support from the community for their proposal to site the Victorian toxic waste treatment facility in Hobsons Bay.

How can they make such a claim when there has not been public consultation to date and their briefings so far have been to a very limited audience? At an Innova briefing for environmental groups, at which only two groups attended, I told them that I would oppose any attempt by Innova to bring contaminated and toxic wastes from all over Victoria into Hobsons Bay.

The place for such a facility is outside the metropolitan area in a proper waste disposal facility.

Speaking to many Hobsons Bay residents, I have yet to find anyone who agrees with the proposal to bring contaminated soil and toxic wastes from outside Hobsons Bay into our city for processing.

Where have the Innova spin doctors got the strong support for their proposal? I am imploring the Hobsons Bay community to show its concerns when the public consultation meeting is arranged.

Geoff Mitchelmore,

Altona.
