Werribee’s Luke Egan in action from the game against Hume City Broncos. Egan scored 20 points in the Devils’ first win of the season.
WERRIBEE’S Big V womens basketball side is knocking on the door of the top four after defeating Melbourne University 63-57 on Sunday.
Elisha Foley completed a very busy weekend with 17 points and lots of court time. Captain Emma Coyne also worked hard and Paige Grace scored 12 points.
This was in contrast to Saturday night at home against top team Blackburn, where turnovers were costly and Blackburn made the most of them.
Dionne Fenton top-scored with 18 points but the She-devils never gave up and actually outscored Blackburn in the last quarter.
Saturday night saw the first win of the season for coach Warwick Giddey, captain Brad Salter and their Big V championship men against Hume City Broncos 85-70.
Luke Egan led the way with 20 points and he has proved to be an excellent acquisition for the team.
Both Michael Petridis and Chris Moore were extremely active on the court which meant the Devils led from start to finish.
On Sunday both men’s teams travelled down the freeway to Dandenong.
The Championship men went down 104-88, though Brad Salter had an excellent game with five assists and 12 points.
Top scorer Michael Petridis (27 points and three three-pointers) was well supported by Graeme Anstey with 10 points.
The Youth League side was well beaten by Dandenong 133-75 in what is very much a developmental season for the team.
Both of the team’s big players had good games, including Ben Dickinson (15 points) and Arnaud Lenferna (10) and his work under the ring with 10 rebounds was excellent.
This week should see some sensational basketball with Werribee’s men taking on ladder leaders Sandringham on Saturday night at 8.15pm.
Werribee’s Youth League team complete a Saturday night double header when they take on Ballarat and have an excellent chance to add to their wining ratio.
Sunday sees the She-Devils at home against Melbourne University with a 2pm tip-off.
