WYNDHAM police boss Shane Dowling would like the Federal Government to conduct comprehensive safety audits on all of its major roads as part of next week’s Budget.

“The cost of road trauma to the community is incredible,” he said.

He pointed to the Maltby Bypass as one example of a road that needed to be looked at.

“It’s a relatively new road but there are still some concerns about safety rails,” he said.

Insp Dowling said while the Commonwealth Games significantly improved public transport infrastructure in Melbourne, it was time to look at the outer suburbs.

“Both in terms of safety and reducing crime, if we could get people off the roads and out of cars, it would do more to improve residents’ quality of life than anything else.”

On a personal note, Insp Dowling said he hoped the government would look at reducing taxes.

“We pay far too much tax in this country,” he said.

“People with more expendable income are good for the economy and generate jobs.”

He said there would be more jobs than people in the future, but only few incentives to stay at work or job-share with the present tax regime.
