WITH the stage names R.A.Q. Wifey, Huskee, R.I.C.H and L.i.l’G, the four-member music group Davelles sound like hip-hop superstars.
It might not be long until the multi-talented relatives, who can all sing, rap, dance and write songs, become famous.
The group’s members, whose real names are Raquel Morales Verceles, Carlos Verceles, Richard Verceles and Angelo Nguyen, started performing together in 2008.
“We started out at a function and someone asked us if we could do another event. At the start, we only did it for fun, as a hobby,” Raquel said.
St Albans teenager Angelo, aged 16, is her brother and the group’s other two male members are also siblings.
Since they formed Davelles, the talented young adults have performed across Melbourne, including at a charity event for the Black Saturday bushfire appeal last year in Hoppers Crossing and in Laverton at the annual Philippine Fiesta.
“We sing, we dance. We can do everything. We can do pop, R ‘n’ B, hip-hop, salsa, even rock, it depends on our audience,” Raquel said.
“When people hear our music, all ages like it, from five to 70,” Carlos said.
Last Friday, they performed in front of 500 people at a concert for a touring Filipino star.
The Davelles’ members all grew up in the western suburbs, which they call the “west side” and they train at the Urban Force dance studio in Kealba.
“At the moment, it’s hard to divide our time between every work and music,” Richard said.
“I like learning to dance. As a rapper, we don’t really dance, we’re on the mic and connect with the audience.”
Raquel said the best thing about being in a music group was getting to spend time with her family.
“You do come across people who put you down and say you’re wasting your time, but you’re not wasting your time if you love what you do,” she said.
Carlos said the group rehearsed every weekend and added that they hoped to release a single soon.
“Sometimes when we perform, we have to lift each other up, because one of us isn’t feeling it. Then we’re like, ‘Let’s do this’,” Carlos said.
