POINT Cook resident Scott Cunningham is a Jujitsu expert, but this weekend he took part in a different sport for a good cause.
The black-belt martial arts practitioner joined more than 90 other people in the pool for the 2010 Werribee 24 Hour Mega Swim Team Relay on Saturday.
The event, on at the Wyndham Leisure Events Centre, was organised by the Rotary Club of Werribee and Multiple Sclerosis Society of Australia (MS Australia).
The swimming session raised more than $14,000 for MS Australia’s Go For Gold Scholarships and financial assistance programs.
At the relay, Mr Cunningham was part of a swimming team called ‘Go Bruce’ alongside other members of his martial arts club, Senjutsu Ryu Jujitsu, which is based in Altona and Williamstown.
“Many people make the obvious connection and think the team is named after Bruce Lee,’ Mr Cunningham said.
“But we are actually named after Bruce McCulloch, who was a good friend of our instructor and raised a lot of money for MS and cancer, and also had MS and bone cancer himself.”
Mr McCulloch was named Hobsons Bay Citizen of the Year in 2007 for his charity work, before he passed away.
Mr Cunningham said his Jujitsu instructor, John Beckman, was always teaching the younger martial arts students the importance of raising money for good causes.
“Some of our members have also taken part in the Relay for Life for the past few years,” Mr Cunningham.
The sports enthusiast, who also coaches the Werribee Sharks swim team, took up Jujitsu in 2001 after his son Aaron became involved with the sport.
Aaron also took part in the Mega Swim on the weekend with the Go Bruce team.
