STAY out of the way when the balls are flying.

Werribee Table Tennis Association member Richard Lilly said the game can “get pretty full-on” for a non-contact sport.

“You don’t just stand there, you can get quite energetic playing it and those A Grade players are serious business,” he said.

Players range in age from 9 to 90 years old and the teams are ranked by ability, not age.

“That’s the beauty of the game,” Mr Lilly said.

“My daughter said she enjoys playing because she can play against me.”

There are a few father-son and father-daughter teams within the club.

The Werribee club has even produced Olympic-standard players, with former Werribee resident Kyle Davis taking on Beijing in 2008.

The next rising talent on the squad is nine-year-old William, who Mr Lilly says is very good at the moment.

There are 90 members over four grades, but the club is looking to increase as the sports centre receives upgrades in the next 18 months.

The Werribee Table Tennis Association began in 1976, and a few of the original members are still playing.

Club members play anytime Monday to Thursday nights from 7pm to 10pm at the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre, with coaching offered on Saturday mornings between 9 and 11am.

Players will be down at Point Cook Shopping Town from 5.30 to 9.30pm on Friday 26 March displaying their skills, or contact Alan Thomson on 9974 2314.
