THE second annual Twenty20 cricket bash between Werribee Football Club and Werribee Cricket Club saw the cricketers once again dominate.

The cricketers marched to a decent 4/120 off their 20 overs as the footballers floundered at 5/77 in response.

The match was played in high spirits at Soldiers Reserve in Werribee but it was the spitting rain and sporadic thunder and lightning that had everyone worried.

Werribee cricket captain Paul Murray provided some highlights early smashing a 49 in quick fashion. His knock included a massive six over deep midwicket.

The ball would have greeted Werribee Secondary College students on Thursday morning after it crashed through a nearby classroom window.

Down the batting card Nathan Pring put together 31 to second top score for his side while opener David Wolfe pitched in with 19 at the top of the order.

In the field, the footy players were vocal when the rare wickets fell. Tim Bonghetti produced a decent catch in the outfield, vice-captain Robbie Castello looked at home behind the stumps, while captain Dom Gleeson produced a brilliant dive to save two.

“I think we were a little bit underdone,” Gleeson said after the game with a smile.

“I don’t think too many of the boys have played too much cricket but it was good to get rid of the cricket bug to be honest every body watches it but nobody has the chance to play it.”

After the change, the cricketers went to work in the field and forced three ducks including opener Marty Pask who faced the long walk back to the stand to the sound of quacking – most of it from his team-mates.

Castello was in good nick, edging his way to a total of 21, while Alex Simpson made a solid 18 but in the end the cricketers racked up win number two.

Gleeson had a frank, albeit tongue in cheek assessment of the performance. “Marty Pask disgraced himself, Robbie Castello was good, pretty strong behind the wicket but I think we all disgraced ourselves to be honest.

“We did it (lost) last year as well and we didn’t come close then either.’
