FOOTSCRAY Edgewater’s all-rounder John Hastings received selection into the Prime Minister’s (PM’s) XI that played the West Indies in a one-day match in Canberra last Thursday.
Hastings did not fare well with the bat or ball, but given the West Indies made 5/399 off 45 overs, it’s fair to say not many of the PM’s XI bowlers had their best day.
With the bat, Hastings did not survive his first ball, out stumped, as the PM’s XI lost by 90 runs, under the Duckworth/Lewis method.
NEWPORT suffered a one run defeat in round 16 of the Baseball Victoria Division One season on Sunday going down 9-10 to Geelong.
According to Baseball Victoria’s website, the Rams fought back from a 7-1 deficit to force a deadlock at 9-9 heading into the bottom of the last inning.
Chris Bramwell did the hard yards for the Rams but in the end the Baycats at home came out victorious.
WILLIAMSTOWN is in an okay position after day one of its Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association clash with Malvern on Saturday.
The Seagulls knocked over the Malvern side on its home deck for 235 thanks to Daryl Clemson and Craig Sheedy who led the charge with three wickets apiece.

THE Werribee Tigers have been pumping weights, running heaps of kilometres and putting in the hard yards in preparation for their clash with the Werribee Cricket Club in the annual Twenty20 match between the co-tenants of Chirnside Park on Wednesday night. The footballers under skipper Dom Gleeson, will be looking to show their prowess with bat and ball against the might of the Werribee Cricket Club led by Paul Murray. The game starts at 6pm at Chirnside Park. Werribee Football Club will hold its AGM on 25 February at Chirnside Park.
ALTONA comprehensively accounted for Werribee RSL in its clash in the Royal Victorian Bowls Association premier division, with Altona taking three rinks and the match at Altona Bowls Club.
The final score was Altona 16-113 to the Bees 2-77.
The result all but rules out Werribee from finals calculations, but Altona is crowing about its win which will see it jump Melbourne into second spot by a point, despite Melbourne winning two rinks and its match on the weekend.
Paul Dorgan skipped Altona’s best rink, smashing the Bees’ Trent Curtis 36-10, while Brendan Barker’s rink salvaged some points for Werribee, knocking off skip Wayne Roberts 29-23.
ALTONA Gators got its 2010 season off to a great start, with a successful trip across Melbourne to the Eltham Dandenong basketball tournament.
The Gators’ entered 16 junior teams in the tournament, with 14 teams progressing to the finals in an ominous sign of things to come for Altona in the Victorian Junior Basketball League season.
“All in all, I think a great performance across the board by the teams,” said David Nesbitt, coach to the under 16.1 boys team and the Gators’ player development officer.
THE Gators’ new senior women’s coach Sharon Grieve was in charge of the under-20s women’s side that lost in the grand final of the Eltham Dandenong tournament.
“This was the first time the girls played together and ended up in the grand final. Not bad for the first time,” Grieve said.
“We ended up playing Kilsyth and went down by 10 points. They had a big squad of 13 players over the weekend so had fresh legs at the end of the day. We ran with eight girls who had a big weekend, so overall the girls did a great job and I am looking forward to a year ahead with them.”
THE Western Bulldogs are certainly making the rounds in the sporting fields. After trying their hand at cricket in the second annual Twenty20 cricket bash with the Melbourne Storm at St Albans’ Kings Park, the Bulldogs hit the tees at Sunshine Golf Club.
The best of the West were seen having a bash at the Derrimut Rd course on Tuesday as part of a team building exercise.
