Cameras and action ... Photo still from the film Where The Wild Things Are was partly filmed in Wyndham.

SOMETHING wild whisked its way to Wyndham.

And two years later can now be seen on the big screen.

The film ‘Where The Wild Things Are” had major sequences shot in the Mountain View Quarry and at the You Yangs.

The movie is an adaptation of the classic Maurice Sendak story about a mischievous young boy called Max, who creates his own magical world inhabited by wild creatures who crown him their ruler.

Locations manager Russell Boyd said the local area staged two out of the 15 large sets, which involved the enchanting forest backdrop and fort settings.

“The creatures were quite large and we needed room to move,” he said.

“There were big explosions which were easier to have in a quarry.”

The 250 crew spent six weeks at the ideal spot and up to eight minutes of that footage made the film.

Director Spike Jonze scoured the world for more than 18 months to choose regional Victoria over Hawaii, New Zealand, Argentina and the US.

Mr Boyd said there was nowhere else that could offer sand dunes, forests, cliff tops, oceans and quarries all in a short drive from each other.

There were 11 different locations selected across Victoria.

It’s estimated the production generated $57 million for the Victorian economy and more than 670 jobs.

The film opens nationally on 3 December.
