RUGBY union player Niua Puaka is heading off with the Victorian Schoolboys for the European Under 16s tour this week.

The Grange Secondary College student will be playing nine games over one month, travelling to England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Dubai.

The 15-year-old has represented Victoria for the past four years and has been selected to participate in the Victorian Development Squad.

Niua said whatever he did in life, he hoped it would include rugby.

“I want to be a professional and play for Australia,” he said.

“And then one day perhaps coach and teach younger kids how to play too.”

Wyndham City Council recognised Niua’s achievements by presenting him with the Mayoral Youth Award for Sport last week.

Niua said the $500 award will be put towards his tour equipment and safety kit for Europe.

“And a bit of pocket money too,” he said.

Niua also received a three-year scholarship to St Kevin’s College this year, which he will commence next year.

“It was a pretty big deal, they have a really good rugby program but I’m a bit shaky about leaving my friends,” he said.

Although the season has finished for Niua’s local club the Wyndham Rugby Union Rhinos, he still keeps busy with seven days a week of training.

Niua’s strict personal training regime includes speed and endurance as well as weights and general conditioning.
