THE $24 million Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre redevelopment has been fast-tracked due to the booming population.

Wyndham City Council has approved plans for 11 indoor basketball and six outdoor netball courts.

The major revamp was to be developed in two stages.

Mayor Shane Bourke said the facility was operating at capacity with only five courts.

“As part of the redevelopment council will be further consulting with the community and facility users, to determine their needs, following initial consultation earlier in the year,” Cr Bourke said.

“The proposed works also include upgrades to the gymnasium and fitness areas and general centre improvements.”

Truganina Ward councillor Glenn Goodfellow said the works were necessary to cater for Wyndham’s growth.

“The new and upgraded facilities will encourage greater participation by Wyndham residents in basketball, netball and other sports offered at the centre,” he said.

The appointed architect will shortly start the detailed design of the project.
