YOUNG wildlife crusaders have used the Werribee River to get their creative juices flowing.
The Weerama Festival’s VicUrban Recycled Art Project challenges students to create art from the waterway.
Junior primary pupils will decorate fishes, senior primary pupils are set to make wildlife sculptures and secondary students will build a sustainable housing development.
Weerama co-ordinator Heather Marcus said the project was more than a piece of art.
“We wanted to educate students about the importance of the river,” she said.
“This might make people more aware about what litter is doing to our waterways.
“It can kill off wildlife and we want to keep it healthy.
“Many might not even be aware that we have this fabulous river running through this city.” Ms Marcus said 10 schools had already signed up.
“One school advised us they had 120 entries,” she said. “This project gives the kids scope, imagination and creativity. There are endless possibilities and it will be one of the most creative projects undertaken in Wyndham.”
All items will be on display at the Werribee Plaza during the festival from 26-29 March.
Each category winner will receive $800 worth of sustainability products.
