Watch out ... A council survey will set out to identify hoons using Cambridge Cres as a racetrack.

HOONS leaving their “special signatures” along Cambridge Cres in Taylors Lakes might think twice before putting pedal to the metal again.

The Brimbank Traffic Management Unit is surveying the area to catch the drivers who have been “scaring the life” out of residents for the past year.

Unit Acting Sergeant Trevor Poulton said Cambridge Cres had been “an active file” since last March, after Brimbank City Council referred the matter to the unit.

He said three traffic officers were patrolling the area to identify the hoons.

The concern was addressed after Brimbank City Council received a petition from residents of the crescent, asking for road humps to be installed in the area.

“At this stage we don’t have any specific persons identified,” Acting-Sgt Poulton said.

“ We have a rough description of vehicles, but we don’t have any registration numbers.”

Cambridge Cres resident Diane, who did not want her surname printed, collected up to 40 signatures last year on a petition asking the council to install road humps.

Late in 2004 a motorcycle ended up in a resident’s front yard as a result of careless driving, Diane said.

She said the area was being used as a racetrack, especially during wet weather, and the reckless driving was scaring residents.

“You can’t even get their registration numbers because of the smoke,” Diane said.

Brimbank City Council has written to tell Diane it will undertake traffic surveys “sometime after Easter”.

Councillor Margaret Giudice said the four bends along Cambridge Cres encouraged reckless driving.

“The hooning seems to be happening on the bends, and that’s why I’ve asked for a further investigation.

“If the residents want speed humps then I support the residents because they want a quieter area,” Cr Giudice said.
