Still not enough

BRIMBANK residents claim last week’s State Government announcement to increase services on the Sydenham train line would do little to ease commuter frustration at peak times.
Beginning 10 October, there will be two new morning peak services every day on the Sydenham line and one new service in the evening peak every day.
There will also be a new after school service running from Flinders Street to St Albans.
However annoyed commuters have called for further increases at peak times maintaining this was the only way to improve “cramped” and “uncomfortable” conditions.
David Anderson, secretary of the Delahey Action Group, said the interval between trains needed to be cut down from every 20 minutes to every 15 minutes.
“It’s fine for the government to put on more trains, but we need four trains an hour, not three,” Mr Anderson said.
“The government has done nothing for Brimbank commuters once again.
“Why should we be less served then people in the eastern suburbs?”
Mr Anderson called for more frequent services on Sunday mornings when trains only begin to run at 20-minute intervals from 9.49am.
And he said train frequency was not the only problem for commuters, stating conditions of stations across Brimbank, but in particular Watergardens, were second-rate.
“Watergardens is the worst station. People are waiting for long periods of time with no protection from the weather.
“For the amount of traffic it's handling, the station needs to improve.”
President of the Public Transport Users Association, Daniel Bowen, welcomed the new services but said more still needed to be done to improve the system.
“These upgrades show more trains can be run using the rail infrastructure already available, and we look forward to further service boosts, both in peak hour and outside peak times, to cut crowding and waiting times.”
