ILLEGAL construction work, vehicles with dirty tyres and pet problems are the main local laws Brimbank residents have been fined over, across the past 12 months.

More than 180 fines have been sent out under the protection of council property laws, which includes construction work started without a permit and unlicensed materials dumped on roads.

The highest number of fines given out under the law related to engineering infringements on building projects.

The council’s acting general manager of city development, Stuart Menzies, said the secondmost common problem was vehicles with dirty tyres driven onto council property.

“A person must not drive, or allow to be driven, from land onto council property any motor vehicle whereby the wheels of that vehicle deposits mud, soil, sand, concrete or rock on the council property,” Mr Menzies said.

This includes vehicles which carry mud and dirt on councilmanaged roads.

The municipality’s secondhighest problem came from irresponsible pet owners.

The council has issued 130 fines for dogs being ‘at large’ during the daytime and another 100 for failing to apply to register their dog or cat, over the last 12 months.

Council employees have also sent out 104 fines for activities and obstructions on or over council property.

“The majority of obstructions on council property relate to the display of cars for sale,” Mr Menzies said.

“Other obstructions include the selling of other goods on council property, like flowers, displaying goods for sale, or signs on council property.”

Brimbank residents said while they welcomed the council punishing people who broke the law, they would like to see more action on public drinking.

Last month, the council told Star they gave out almost 250 infringement notices across the past three years for drinking or carrying alcohol in public places.
