VOLUNTEERS from the Brimbank State Emergency Service received about 100 calls for help when wild weather hit Melbourne over the weekend.

Brimbank’s SES Unit controller Brad Dalgleish estimated the service received close to 100 telephone calls after 2.30pm on Saturday, when storms and winds of up to 89km per hour hit the municipality.

Mr Dalgleish said crews had been “flat-out working 24/7” until Monday morning, and as Star went to press he was expecting pleas for help to increase.

“Most have been about flooding and building damage,” Mr Dalgleish said.

“Quite a few (buildings) suffered significant damage, although there was also a lot of minor damage and flash flooding.”

Mr Dalgleish said some ceilings collapsed after being hit by hailstones.

SES volunteers also rescued two people trapped within cars in floodwater, including one at Watergardens.

Mr Dalgleish appealed to residents not to drive through or play in floodwater.
