KEILOR was bundled out of its Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division semi-final in controversial circumstances, when its semi-final against Airport West/St Christopher’s ended in a draw at Etzel Street Reserve on the weekend.
In what was a rematch of last season's semi-final, the match was a non-event with just 23 overs played and Airport West advanced to the grand final, given its higher placing on the home-and-away season ladder.
The match was called off on Sunday after a severe thunderstorm hit Melbourne Saturday afternoon.
Play was set to resume Sunday, but the pitch had taken on too much water, rendering the match a draw and kicking Keilor ungraciously out of the finals.
Keilor co-coach Matt Willmott said other alternatives should be possible to the VTCA to settle a washed-out final.
“I remember years back, when they first started this comp, where they had the rule that the Monday was a reserve day. We’re standing at a local ground right now, watching one of our lower sides, and the sun’s shining,” he said on Sunday, moments after the match was declared a wash-out.
“If there’s a slim chance it would be able to be played tomorrow, obviously we would have liked that, but it’s not something the VTCA have allowed. We knew the rules though, I think after this year, they might have to look at it (a reserve day) for sure.”
Willmott said the entire Etzel Street Reserve ground was flooded.
“The whole thing (pitch and outfield) were soaked. We came off after 20-odd overs and the shocking storm yesterday, we were never going to get back on after that.
“We had to go to the ground today just to do the right thing, and when we got there, the wicket and the whole square was pretty much under water. There was never a chance to get on.”
For the record, Airport West was batting before the storm and made it to 0/61 off 23 overs before rain stopped play.
