WHEN Madeline Odgers’ brother tells her to jump, her only question is how high.
When he tells her to march, she marches.
The 13-year-old may just be the only teenage girl in the state who addresses her brother as Sir and salutes him.
Although it may seem that Madeline is living every girl’s nightmare, in reality, she’s living her dream.
The teenager is so driven to pursue a career in the Royal Australian Air Force, she’s willing to do anything to achieve her goal – well, almost anything.
Madeline has enrolled as a cadet in the air force’s Sunshine squadron and is thrilled to be working towards her wings.
Her 15-year-old brother, Josh, has been at the squadron for two years and has been promoted to corporal, making him Madeline’s commanding officer.
Although he outranks her in uniform, Madeline is quick to insist that the same rules do not apply at home.
“It doesn’t give him the right to treat me super mean,” Madeline said.
“When we are at the squadron he has to treat me the same as everyone else and he definitely can’t boss me around at home.”
Mum Heather says the family was pleased at Madeline’s decision to follow in her brother’s footsteps.
“I’m not sure why she decided to do it but we’re hoping it will teach her the values of discipline and respect,” Heather said.
“It’s going to mean a lot of extra early mornings for us but it’s worth it for the rewards they get out of it.”
Madeline will join the ranks of more than 1000 new cadets who will be earning their stripes this year.
The teenager said she hoped to pursue a career as a dog handler in the air force after graduation.
