DAVID Galea never considered himself to be a fashion guru, but jumped at the chance to flex his designer muscles.
The 16-year-old will soon be seeing his designs on the streets of Melbourne, after winning first place in an MTV art competition.
The student from Catholic Regional College won $5000 after his T-shirt design was selected from almost 500 entries to win the competition.
The teenager was also awarded a week-long internship with MTV, as part of his prize.
Inspired by different slurpee flavours, the T-shirt will be available to buy at selected 7-Eleven stores over the next few months.
The teenager said winning the award had come as a complete shock, especially since he had almost missed his chance to enter.
“My mum saw a commercial on TV about the competition and told me to enter.
“I went on the internet straight away and found out that entries closed the next day.
“So I actually just made it on time.”
Not only did his design win, another two attempts also hit all the right buttons, making it into the top 20.
“When I found out the news I was on top of the world,” David said.
“I also got a new job the same day and I couldn’t believe how lucky I was.
“It was the best day of my life.”
The teenager says he can’t wait until his designs hit the streets of Brimbank.
“It will be so surreal to see people walking down the street wearing my T-shirt.
“It will be amazing.”
David hopes to be a graphic designer after he completes his studies.
