CAIRNLEA women’s soccer team achieved the ultimate this year, producing the perfect season.

The State League Three North-West team went through the season undefeated, ending with a 5-1 win over Keilor Park in the grand final in September that earned it promotion to State League Two.

Cairnlea coach Mustafa Fehmi said it was a fantastic effort, and thinks his side can emulate the winning effort next season.

“I’m very proud of the girls, and it all paid off. I reckon they’ll be up there again,” Fehmi said.

League golden boot winner Damla Mutluel led the way for Cairnlea, scoring 40 goals for the season, a personal best in her nine-year stint at the club.

“I like “headering” the goals in. I’m not that tall at all, but I can just jump really high,” Mutluel said.

She said the success of the team could partly be credited to the inspiring coach.

“I think he’s one of a kind,” she said. “He’s been good all year, and he’s really good at encouraging everyone.”

Mutluel, a Manchester United fan, said her goal for next season was simple.

“I just want to do what we did this year.”

Fehmi said Mutluel was something special up forward for his side.

“She was fantastic, and she didn’t even score in every game. I think she scored six (goals) a few times.”

The team sheet sent to Star listed Mutluel as a midfielder/striker; imagine how many she would have netted had she only played striker.
