WHEN the barriers go up at Flemington today, Aneta Pazeski’s heart will be pounding.
And it won’t be because of the horses.
Like most women, Ms Pazeski’s eye will be on the gowns rather than the geldings.
The Ardeer resident has been chosen to compete in the Melbourne Cup Fashions on the Field competition.
The 35-year-old designer will face off against the cream of Australia’s fashion industry to take out the top nod in the design award category.
“I’m so excited,” Ms Pazeski said.
“It’s a real honour to have been selected.”
The designer, who manages her own label and boutique in Cairnlea has come a long way since she first opened her business in 2004.
She was an award winner at Star News Group’s Women in Business Awards in 2008 and a finalist in the Australian Masters of Fashion Awards in 2007.
Although it can be hard work, Ms Pazeski enjoys her job so much it’s almost like a hobby.
“It’s like a fairytale job,” Ms Pazeski said.
“I’m doing what every little girl dreams of doing and I absolutely love it.
“I wake up every morning and I can’t wait to get into work.
“If I could do it 24 hours a day I probably would.”
The designer is hoping her Cup creation, a 1950s Dior-inspired red gown will get her over the line in the competition.
Several Brimbank businesses have also pitched in by donating their services to style Ms Pazeski’s model on the day.
Ms Pazeski said she was thrilled to be representing the West in the prestigious competition.
“There aren’t many designers in the West so it’s really special to be able to showcase our talents to the rest of Australia,” Ms Pazeski said.
Her boutique, Zanet Couture, can be found on Furlong Rd in Cairnlea.
