A BRIMBANK resident is appealing to the community to help stamp out a serial litterbug illegally dumping rubbish in Cairnlea.

The woman, who did not wish to be named, told Star the unknown offender had been wreaking havoc along Cairnlea streets over the past three months.

Each week under cover of night, several large garbage bags of rubbish are dumped along roads and nature strips, forcing residents to clean up the mess, the woman claimed.

Streets targeted by the litterbug include Nobel Banks Drive, Furlong and Station roads and Ken Jordan Drive.

“We’re sick and tired of it,” the resident said. “The problem has been increasing over recent weeks from a bag here and there to several large bags every week. They have been getting split open by birds and rubbish is spreading all over our streets and reserves. These filthy pigs have been doing this nearly every week for the last three months and no-one seems interested in helping to stop them.”

Brimbank Council City Development Manager Leigh Harrison said the council was aware of the problem and was taking steps to stamp out the serial littering.

Mr Harrison said the council had removed dumped rubbish from Nobel Banks Drive on 10 occasions and from Ken Jordan Drive on a further six occasions. “Since 21 May 2009, Council’s Dumped Rubbish work crew now patrols these areas a minimum of once a week, and this area of Cairnlea is scheduled to be swept on a weekly cycle, compared to our regular six-week residential cycle,” Mr Harrison said.

But the Cairnlea resident said she believed council was not doing enough to solve the problem. She said she was considering taking matters into her own hands.

“I’m thinking of writing up a flyer to drop in local letterboxes asking people for information so that hopefully we can catch this person,” she said.

Mr Harrison also encouraged residents to help stamp out littering by reporting offenders to the council on 9249 4000.
