THE secret to a long life could well be a tipple or two.
That’s what Teresa Du’Pratt believes.
And at 99 years of age, she could be considered something of an expert.
The St Albans resident enjoys a glass of port every day and credits the indulgence, along with a loving family, as the secret behind her remarkable longevity.
“I have one glass in the afternoon and another in the evening,” Teresa said.
“I told my doctor about it and he said it’s not doing me any harm.”
Far from hampering her health, the cheeky habit keeps Teresa in the best of spirits.
“If she refuses her port, that’s when we know she’s really sick,” said son Royston.
Originally from India, Teresa worked as a nurse for 38 years in her home country.
During World War II, she was stationed in Burma and worked in an infectious disease hospital for the remainder of her career.
After retiring, Teresa immigrated to Australia to join her family.
She has lived with her son and daughter-in-law Yvonne for the past three years.
Following her husband’s death in 1996, her son vowed to take care of Teresa for the rest of her life.
“We promised her we would never put her in a nursing home and I think that is partly what has kept her going through the years,” Roystan said.
“She’s got a loving family and something to look forward to, rather than being depressed.”
Teresa said her family, including three children, nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, kept her entertained. “They come over almost every weekend and we have so much fun together,” Teresa said.
“I really look forward to seeing them all each week.”
Teresa will celebrate her 100th birthday on Monday with a church service followed by a special get-together with family and friends.
Her centenary was marked by a letter from the Queen and Governor-General.
Teresa said she felt blessed to have lived such a full life.
“I’m strong and I’m very happy,” she said. “I’m looking forward to my 100th birthday and my 101st birthday.”
