VU ST Albans Spurs travelled to Diamond Creek for round three of the Victorian Women’s Football League but did not return with the match points.
An undermanned Spurs side was unable to match it with the Creek side, the final 13.10 to 8.11 (59).
The Spurs were behind at the first change but were nipping at the host’s heels, and by half time there was only three points in it.
The third quarter was where the Creekers pulled away, kicking six goals for the term to the Spurs two.
The visitors outscored the hosts by a point in the final term but it was not enough to reel in the margin.
“Due to seven of our regular players being unavailable this week, the opportunity was given to four Reserves players to step up and play their first game for Spurs Seniors,” coach Pauline Cook said. “It was great to see Reserves players being able to make a strong claim to retain their spots in the Seniors next week.”
The Spurs only had two players on the bench for rotations putting an increased physical demand on their players.
The game was a fiercely contested affair and with only two interchange players on the bench, it was made an even more physically demanding one.
Diamond Creek were too quick and accurate with their kicking on the day, Cook said.
“While it was disappointing to lose the game, the Spurs will be strengthened by the return of five of our regular players next week.
“This, added to the new players who acquitted themselves well all point to continued optimism of where we are going this season,” Cook said.
The Spurs have already turned their focus squarely on their next match at home on Sunday against Berwick.
