JOHN Brumby’s State Transport Plan has been labelled a mixed bag of bonuses and blights on the West.
While additional train stations and upgrades to existing ones have been welcomed, some residents have condemned a planned tunnel, which they predict will see a large amount of traffic “dumped” in the middle of Sunshine West.
Kororoit MLA, Marlene Kairouz, said the plan was a “very big, very ambitious one”, but a plan which she believed would provide “a number of excellent things for the west”.
“We have public transport to Caroline Springs and the Sydenham electrification,” Ms Kairouz said.
“There is $440 million to separate trains at key level crossings and it is going to create 10,000 jobs over the next few years.”
Ms Kairouz said while the Main Road, St Albans level crossing had not been addressed in the plan, she was confident it would be addressed by the State Government, in the future.
“The only one that has been listed at the moment is Springvale, and that’s not going to cost $440 million,” she said.
“I will continue to advocate on behalf of the community; I have already met with local government, met with VicRoads and with people in the local area.
“We need to keep up that advocacy.”
She said she had received positive feedback following stage one of the government’s three-phase strategy to upgrade and maintain level crossings in St Albans, which had resulted in the grade separation of Taylor’s Rd.
“The other part of the strategy is Main St and Furlong Rd,” she said.
Costings listed in the Transport Plan have come under fire from Shadow Transport Minister Terry Mulder, who said the announcement of the ‘Sydenham Electrification’ was misleading residents in the west.
