WESTERN Athletics has pulled off its most successful states campaign in recent years with a 17-medal haul at a recent three day Athletics Victoria double.
The Victorian Open and Under 20 Track and Field Championships saw athletes contend with unseasonable chilly weather and rain on Olympic Park’s all-weather track earlier this month.
Continuing recent tradition the titles were held together with the Under 16 and 18 State Relay Championships.
Throwing enthusiast Andrew Peska racked up two gold in the under 20 discus and shot put, while brother Michael became his deputy in discus.
Michael also claimed bronze in the hammer throw.
Veteran Luke Hart ran a scorching 54.44 seconds to win gold in the under 20 400m hurdles by a two-second margin and Daniel Pagnoccolo took one for the jumpers with a winning 13.18m triple jump attempt.
National medallist Laura Baker faced tough resistance from Box Hill’s Hannah Turnbull and was twice resigned to the right-hand side of the dias with narrow misses in the triple and long jump.
The women’s under 18 4x800m team clinched the club’s first team gold- on the last relay event of the championship.
Rachel Menadue, Morgan Mitchell, Lucy Daniel and Lauren Den Ouden blitzed their opponents to record an eight-second difference between themselves and second-placed Glen Huntly.
The titles are the premier event on Athletics Victoria’s summer calendar and are run towards the close of each track and field season.
Junior divisions will contest the best athletes Victoria has to offer this weekend at Olympic Park in conjunction with the open and under 20 state relays.
