YARRAVILLE Station Plaza will be made a priority over the coming months as it receives a major makeover in an attempt to make it more pedestrian friendly.
The $738,000 project will link the historic Yarraville station, bus interchange and Station Park and is designed to transform the area into a centre of activity in Maribyrnong.
Maribyrnong mayor Sel Sanli said the development would bring much needed money into the area.
“The aim of the Yarraville Station Plaza project is to convert the area into a vibrant focal point of the village to attract commercial activity west of the railway line,” Cr Sanli said.
He added the council was aware residents may be concerned traffic would be disrupted during the project.
“We will attempt to ease the inconvenience caused during the construction works and signs will be erected to notify commuters of the temporary bus stops and taxi ranks will be relocated adjacent to the project area,” he said.
Sheoak Ward representative Cr Martin Zacharov said traffic flow around the area would change once the upgrades are completed.
“The improvements will lessen the number of vehicle movements in the plaza and lead to improved pedestrian safety,” he said.
Cr Sanli said the project was an important step forward for Maribyrnong.
“Council hopes to not only improve its usability as a thoroughfare, but also make the plaza a pleasant space people want to visit,” he said.
Work on the area is expected to be completed by December.
