Hungry Carlo does it again

Wheely good … Graham Carlson was at it again in the Footscray Cycling Club A-Grade criterium, taking first-place honours after a competitive race on Saturday.
GRAHAM Carlson may win his fair share of Footscray Cycling Club races but his desire to win never seems to end.
It was a very hungry Carlson who took home the winner's sash in the club’s A-Grade race at the VUT circuit in Hoppers Crossing in honour of the late Alby Saunders.
It was Carlson's teammate Steve Pilson who fired the first shot, gaining a few hundred metres on the field before being shut down after a handful of laps, only for Carlson to counter-attack and make his own solo move once Pilson was absorbed back into the bunch.
Caught off guard, the peloton allowed Carlson to build a 30-second lead before beginning the chase, only for Pilson with Paul Anders in tow to again go on the attack once his teammate was in sight.
Pilson and Anders joined Carlson at the front of the race, with many onlookers predicting the podium places were already decided, but level heads in the bunch led by Ben Johnson, Daniel Hopper, Dom Dudkiewicz and Brett Hickford kept the breakaway within their sights.
Cracks began to emerge in the break when Anders and Pilson rejoined the main bunch, leaving Carlson alone and soon enough it was anyone's race as the leader was absorbed as well.
With three laps to go, it appeared a bunch sprint would ensue, handing the advantage to the season's form sprinter Dudkiewicz but Carlson wanted the win more than anyone in the bunch, and with some freshness in his legs, he blew the doors off the peloton.
Daniel Hopper was the only one to respond, but never got to Carlson's wheel, and by the time the bell had rung to signal the final lap, Carlson had built an unassailable lead and was able to cruise across the line comfortably for the win. Hopper valiantly fought off the fast-charging peloton for second and Pilson won the bunch kick for third.
In accepting the winner's sash, Carlson conceded that any other week his breakaway with Anders and Pilson would have surely continued on to win the race, and gave credit to the A-Grade bunch for their efforts in bringing them back.
In other Footscray Cycling Club results, Colin Morris won B Grade ahead of Rob Stocker and Ben Ryan, Damien Chester took C Grade ahead of David Lane and Ashley Brehaut, D grade went to Goran Pajic ahead of Jim Brennan and Peter Nannery and Mina Barsoun won E Grade with Ross Liley and Steve Harris second and third.
