All in one … National under 15s Badminton champion Gronya Somerville with coach Erin

MARIBYRNONG Secondary College’s sports centre is scheduled to open in two months.

The $10 million sports centre, which the principal described as “an amazing stadium for a school let alone a western suburbs government school”, was due to be completed in December.

But students are waiting for finishing touches to be completed before they can start training.

Star had a sneak peak at the complex, where under 15s national badminton champion Gronya Somerville had the first hit on the courts.

Ms Somerville can’t wait to start training and transferred schools this year to take part in the specialist sport program.

Her coach and physical education teacher Ben Walklate said the beauty of the complex was that Ms Somerville could do her education, training and sport at the one school.

Mr Walklate said the badminton stadium – inside the sports centre – was painted black, with side-lighting and badminton-specific lines.

“This ensures players can see the small white shuttle-cock and hear it whizzing through the air, which helps players improve their rhythm and reaction time,” Mr Walklate said.

Maribyrnong Secondary College sport director Rob Carroll said in addition to the badminton courts, the sport centre has international-level basketball courts, a weight training and recovery centre, sports science testing facilities, conference facilities and classrooms.

“We have gone from having a 600-square metre school gym to a 6000-square metre stadium,” he said.

Mr Carroll said students would have full access to everyone they could possibly need to help reach their goals.

The school is keen to pursue funding for stage two of the plan, which will include synthetic fields for soccer, a hockey pitch and administration facilities.
