Lollipop lady can’t stop

Julie Argagnotto, 75, is once again pulling on the safety vest and putting out the school crossing signs as the lollipop lady for the Argyle St pedestrian crossing outside Footscray West Primary School.
Ms Argagnotto is one of the municipality’s longest serving school crossing guards, this year racking up 30 years of service.
She has seen everything from preps taking their first steps into primary school to grade six students walking out the gate for the last time and even past students who pop by to say hello.
“Some (of the students) are at university or high school and they cross and say ‘hi Julie’, and I don’t recognise them all because they’ve all grown so much,” she laughed.
In 1980, Ms Argagnotto had been a chef at a North Melbourne restaurant and sick of working in the hospitality industry, jumped at an ad calling for school crossing guards.
“I like children, and I said I’d do it for a few years, and all of a sudden it’s been 30. I enjoy it so much,” she said.
“I’m a real socialite with everyone, especially the children.”
Ms Argagnotto spent 25 years helping students and parents at Footscray Primary School cross the street and has been manning the Argyle St crossing for the past five.
She used to do both morning and afternoon shifts until four years ago, when she gave up afternoons because she couldn’t stand the hot summer sun. But she’s in no rush to give up her morning job.
“I can’t say (when) because it could be this year, it could be next year. You never know. At the moment I’m still fit, I’m still alright.”
And with her frequent yoga classes, a walking group and her volunteer work at Gateway Social Support Options, it's fair to say there’s still plenty of years to go.
