A WOMAN had to be freed from her car last week after it was hit by a tram near Highpoint Shopping Centre.

MFB Western Zone Commander Ken Brown told 3AW radio the No.82 Footscray to Moonee Ponds tram hit the car as it was turning out of a service lane adjacent to Williamson Rd onto Rosamond Rd around 10am on Friday.

He said the tram derailed and skidded about 20 metres down the road after the collision.

The tram came to a stop, just metres from a high-voltage power pole.

Paramedics freed the 43-year-old woman within the hour and she was taken to Western Hospital with minor injuries.

The tram driver was treated for shock and taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition. No passengers on the tram were injured.

Paramedic team manager Jerome Peyton said the car had been extensively damaged.

“There was significant damage to every panel of the car on the driver’s side,” he said.

“Thankfully the car’s airbags went off including curtain airbags.”
