NEXT month’s Maribyrnong mayoral election looks set to be a three-horse race.
Mayor Michael Clarke, Cr Martin Zakharov and Cr Sel Sanli have confirmed they will be putting their hands up for the job at 2 December’s vote.
Independent councillor Dina Lynch said she was “150 per cent certain” the new mayor would be a Labor affiliate, as the seven-member council had an ALP majority.
The only other independent apart from Cr Lynch is Cr Catherine Cumming.
“The mayoralty is not picked on experience or expertise, it’s a Labor caucus thing. Councils east of us pick on skills or experience, not according to factional warlords,” Cr Lynch said.
However, Cr Sanli said he did not believe the council played party politics.
“I’m interested, but I have to consult with my family and friends,” he said.
“I’ve spoken to a couple of councillors about what they would do if I put my hand up and what their issues and concerns would be. They’ve said they would probably support me.”
Sheoak Ward’s Cr Zakharov said he would also be interested in the position. “There are several councillors who are quite capable but the mayor is likely to be from Labor as they have the majority,” he said.
Saltwater Ward’s Cr John Cumming said he would be interested in possibly becoming mayor in the future, but not during the next 12 months, as he would be too busy with work commitments outside of council.
Cr Sarah Carter said she would also like to be considered for mayor at a future date. Cr Catherine Cumming did not respond to Star’s calls.
