THE next time you think of running a red light at Yarraville’s Williamstown Rd and Somerville Rd intersection, think again.

You might also want to slow down at Maidstone’s Ballarat Rd and Churchill Ave intersection, Footscray’s Geelong Rd and Droop St intersection, and the Geelong St and Geelong Rd intersection in West Footscray.

The four sites are among 30 red light cameras across Melbourne that will be fitted with new digital technology in coming months.

The new red light cameras will also double as speed cameras.

The nominated sites were known for high collision rates and numbers of cars running red lights.

Assistant Commissioner Ken Lay said running red lights was a huge gamble that should not be tolerated.

“Last year 28 people were killed as a result of side impact collisions at intersections, with 25 per cent of all serious injuries also caused this way,” he said.

“Why take the risk? Why put your life or that of someone else in danger?

“If you are photographed going through a red light, particularly speeding through a red light, then you absolutely deserve to be caught as it is just so dangerous.”

“Police have no sympathy for the drivers losing money and demerit points due to their own stupidity, that’s reserved for the hundreds of families spending countless hours in hospital waiting rooms and rehabilitation centres because someone made a stupid decision.”

Mr Lay said the police would continue talks with the State Government to get the entire wet film system upgraded.

The City of Maribyrnong also has five speed cameras at high-risk intersections.
