On the ball … Hassan Hassen is among more than 2000 youths who have been helped by
LIFE for Braybrook teens Hassan Hassen, Ahmed Adem and Emmanuel Makoi hasn’t been easy.
But you wouldn’t know it from their easy-going manner or the way they interact comfortably with the workers at Braybrook’s Youth Enterprise Hub.
The trio, which are part of a core group at YEH, can be found at the centre most days, whether it be to receive help or just kicking back and having a chat.
“I was a trouble maker,” 17-year-old Emmanuel said, revealing he was referred to YEH by the juvenile justice centre.
Emmanuel, who has been part of YEH from the start, is now studying English at Victoria University and is looking at completing a trade when he is done.
Hassan, 16, is currently in year 11 at Braybrook College and describes himself as the “president” of the group.
“I’m good at everything. I entertain the workers,” he said with a laugh.
Hassan was born in east Africa before moving here in 1993. He is currently looking for a part-time job and at school-based apprenticeships in either carpentry or sport and recreation.
He is also a keen rugby and football player.
Ahmed, 19, describes himself as a leader among the African kids and works with both them and the workers to come up with different initiatives for the hub.
He is also doing an Advanced Diploma of Legal Studies and Business at TAFE and hopes to further his studies when he receives his certificate next year.
“It’s actually fun to work between the two groups,” he said.
“Everybody comes here for different reasons. Mostly they just come together and get along.”
None of the three have had it easy but they’re working together to make it that bit easier.
