RAELEENE Eldridge and Stacey Goad aren’t known for being gun ruckmen or topping the goal kicking ladder.
But the pair are making names for themselves within the footy world for adding a woman’s touch to what’s long been known as a male-dominated game.
The two women, who are members of the Western Region Football League’s Women’s Football Foundation, have been an integral part of the WRFL for years and will help celebrate women in football on Monday at the foundation’s season launch.
The foundation was established at the end of 2006 to encourage women and girls to participate in the WRFL and Australian Rules Football.
“They (women) can contribute to all aspects of football,” Ms Goad, Victorian Women’s Football League football operations manager and the WRFL business manager, said.
“There are females that are sitting on boards and now Diana’s (Taylor) president of a league and in the VFL there’s a female footy manager… I suppose coaching would be the only area where women could move up because all the other areas have been covered.”
Ms Goad was a keen player back in 2001, pulling on the guernsey for North Heidelberg.
Ms Eldridge, who is the administrator for North Footscray Football Club, said it was important to continue breaking down the old culture of footy being a boy’s club.
“There’s a lot of good women in local footy, they just don’t get the support they need to stay on and do the job a little bit longer, and I think the Women’s Football Foundation is a pretty good network to help them reinforce that they can do it.
“I’m the first one to say ‘if you want something done, get a woman to do it,’” she laughed.
But one thing Ms Eldridge won’t do, rather ironically, is actually play a game.
“I think I’m good at what I do, but I don’t think I’d be good on the footy field,” she said.
The Women’s Football Foundation Season Launch will be held on 20 April at the Sunshine Golf Club.
Player Anna Gregory and Justice Linda Dessau, who became the second woman in history to be appointed to the AFL Commission, will be some of the guest speakers on the night.
