ASK Wasyl Werboweski what the secret is to living to 100, and he’ll tell you there isn’t one.

“I don’t believe it. I think (God) made a mistake,” he laughed.

The dogmatic Footscray resident will notch up a century tomorrow at a party surrounded by family and friends.

And, if you believe his hype, he’s still got a couple of good years in him.

Wasyl is confident he will live to 102, because that is the age his own grandmother lived to.

“He doesn’t really listen to anyone,” Christine, his favourite great-grandchild said.

“He’s really funny, he says funny stuff.”

The sprightly centenarian was born in the Ukraine and was known for using his impressive Ukrainian dancing skills to charm the ladies.

It eventually paid off when he courted fellow villager Katerina, who he married in 1930.

Katerine passed away two years ago after suffering a heart attack.

Grandson Vasil said even at the age of 84, Wasyl would “dance like a 25-year-old”.

Wasyl and Katerina had one son, Ivan, who went on to give them five grandchildren.

The family now also boasts eight great-grandchildren.

Wasyl and Katerina fled the Ukraine in 1949 to make a better life for their young family. Wasyl now calls Australia “the best country in the world”.

He spent two years in Daylesford working for the State Government, before moving to Footscray and taking up a job at National Forge, where he worked for 24 years without taking one sick day.

He now lives at the Footscray Aged Care Home, where he used to do volunteer work.
