YARRAVILLE’S Herman family is set to do Prime Minister Kevin Rudd proud, after vowing to spend their bonus in the stores.

The family, which relies on a single income, is one of thousands who will receive a $950 low-income bonus for earning less than $80,000.

Martin’s wife Kirsty said the bonus would be used to purchase “luxury” items like runners and clothes.

The family is also looking at the Your Baby Can Read program for two-year-old son Xavier and Emmeline, three months.

“I thought ‘Bonus!’ It’s great, it always helps,” she said.

“They’re items that were on the wish-list that we’d be saving for otherwise.

“We’d never say no to more, but obviously with the last one (stimulus package) I can see that they don’t have control over how people spend it, so by putting it into other sectors like construction definitely helps to strengthen the economy and distributes it (the money) more evenly.”

The family received a $1000 child grant from the Federal Government’s last stimulus package, which they used to buy a new car seat for Emmeline and a double pram.

Mrs Herman is confident this new strategy will pump more money into the economy.

“I know personally when I was out in the shopping centre after the last bonuses came out, the shopping centre was absolutely packed – it was like Christmas.

“There were men there that wouldn’t be there normally during the day, there were so many people and it really looked like it was making a difference.”
